Ella & Pitr and Jonathan Roze have been writing a shared story for around fifteen years: the former from their studio in Saint-Étienne or whilst wandering the streets of the world; the latter initially from his space on the Faubourg Saint-Honoré in Paris, and later from the Place du Parlement de Bretagne in Rennes. Over time, their professional ties have evolved into friendships. Whilst the gallery has dedicated seven exhibitions to Ella & Pitr in Paris, it had so far devoted only a short event to them in Rennes, in the summer of 2025. This is why Jonathan Roze is particularly delighted to present Point de suspension - Ellipsis, Ella & Pitr's new exhibition - their first at the gallery on the Place du Parlement de Bretagne.
On this occasion, Ella & Pitr are unveiling a collection of small painted concrete blocks and glass pieces, as well as a few masks from their Peau de peinture series. The duo also presents a body of canvases that builds on their earlier Plis et replis series. But whilst that series made fabrics the main subjects of the compositions, in these new works the same fabrics become the landscapes. Their characters move amidst mountains of colourful patterns, climbing or hurtling down slopes of fluffy wool and cotton. This subtle shift - transforming fabric from a subject into an object - enables the artists to link their narrative world to pure painting, thereby renewing their work aesthetically whilst adding an extra layer of interpretation.
