Matthieu Pommier

Matthieu Pommier is an industrial designer by training, but he is also a graffiti artist who used to paint under the pseudonym Velvet. He began painting walls in the early 2000s in western France. The maritime and industrial world he encountered there permeated his early artistic explorations. A passionate draughtsman, he naturally gravitated towards the applied arts, while continuing to practise graffiti assiduously. He gradually moved away from spray paint to acrylic and oil paints, which allowed him greater control over colours and gave his images a look closer to what he wanted, both on walls and in his studio. In his painting, he strives to describe human behaviour through the prism of objects, architecture, or the representation of crowds of characters. In his subjects, Matthieu combines his memories and personal history with a rigorous observation of his surroundings to create a world that is both dreamlike and pragmatic. His painting always has a narrative dimension, which is left to the viewer to interpret. The new series of works he is presenting at this inaugural exhibition is inspired by his summer travels, particularly his stay in Morocco.

Since 2020, he has been represented by the Le Feuvre & Roze gallery in Paris, then Jonathan Roze in Rennes. He will hold his first solo exhibition in Brittany in  May / June 2025.
